If you live anywhere in the east, you have a big game hunting destination at your doorstep. To the best of my knowledge, Newfoundland enjoys something that none of the other provinces in Canada can attest to: a success rate of 85 percent with their non-resident moose hunters. It’s the reason so many hunters, like me, keep coming back. Each fall, the caravan of pickups and SUVs line up at the ferry in Nova Scotia, and make their way over to Newfoundland. It’s a testament to the great moose hunting on the island.
Newfoundland is also easily reached via commercial air travel, if you are coming from the US. Unlike other provinces that I have hunted, I have found the entry into Atlantic Canada to be very pleasant. The agents seem to understand that hunting is an acceptable pastime .
The topography, though boggy in places, is easily traversed compared to the western mountains. Many of the outfitters that operate, with a very high success rate, are easily reached by vehicle, so no precious hunting days are lost. Nothing can be more frustrating than waiting to get in or get out of your hunting area because of poor weather.
I have been fortunate to hunt almost all of the North American big game animals, and nothing stirs my heart like a bull moose in the rut. Fortunately, due to the high population of moose in Newfoundland, the season coincides with the best rutting activity. Spot-and-stalk hunting is fairly easy in most areas, but nothing beats the adrenaline pumping action of a bull moose coming to the call. Most guides now are totally familiar with calling, so expect some close encounters with rut-crazed bulls. Once on the ground, most moose are retrieved by Argo-type all-terrain vehicles. You are in for a treat with some excellent meat, and lots of it!
If you are like me, you want to make your plans and go hunt. Why would you wait to see if you are a lucky draw recipient, when a phone call to a Newfoundland outfitter can lock in your dates? If you have hunted Newfoundland, you know what I’m talking about. If not, start making plans for the trip of a lifetime. The whole experience, from the trip to the camp life to the hunt, will be unforgettable. Newfoundlanders are known for their warm, friendly hospitality, out-of-this-world cooking, and keen humor. Their work ethic in putting you on game is second to none. I have travelled all over North America and beyond, hunting, and filming. Newfoundland is one of my favorite destinations, and will be yours as well.
